It is a Foundation University with a public entity, which was established on 15 July 1997 in accordance with the Law Numbered 4281.
The university offers education as per the Higher Education Law numbered 2547 and it owns all of the rights and privileges of a state university.
State of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Nation can reach the permanent target of ‘exceeding modern civilization level’ only by ensuring that the youth receives qualified education whatever the stage is. In this regard, the main purpose of the Istanbul Kültür University offers Quality Higher Education.
Problems in offering quality education, as well as their relevant solution methods are not new for people working at IKU. Since IKU was established by a foundation where educators who have successfully been dealing with education since the 1930s.The university is administrated by a Board of Trustees with experienced people with the qualifications of educators.
Chairman and members of the Board of Trustees spent years for school organizations at all stages of education from kindergarten to higher education, and thereby proved their success in the education sector. As they know that quality can only be reached with the perfect physical environment and selected, experienced and creative education staff, they have always considered these issues as very important.
Offices, classrooms and laboratories of the buildings which are located in Şirinevler Campus in City University type were constructed and equipped meticulously. In addition to Şirinevler Campus, Ataköy Campus was put into service in the 2004-2005 academic year, which has a total area of 65.000 m2, of which 40.000 m2 is indoors and 25.000 m2 is outdoors. In addition to the halls where scientific, social and cultural events are conducted, this campus also has a sports complex. A new campus with an area of 6000 m2 was established for students at the Vocational High Schools in the 2009-2010 Academic year.
Academic staff of IKU consist of selected, efficient and creative instructors. Thanks to the academic personnel, IKU was listed in the first half among the universities in 1998 when the number of publications per instructor in the famous scientific journals determined by the evaluation commission appointed by Interuniversity Board were taken into consideration.
The university was listed among the top ten universities in 1999, despite being a new organization.
Our target is to list our university in the leading three universities, which ranks the 4th among the foundation universities and ranks the 6th among the public universities.
IKU sustained this success consistently. Following inspections and evaluations conducted by YÖK, the university became entitled to state support in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
At IKU, programs are implemented in order to improve the abilities of students, help them gain discussion and such abilities, encourage students to gain habits of criticizing and thinking. We guide our students towards the vision of becoming professionals or researchers who have competing ability at an international level with the motivation of learning to produce information. Furthermore, our prerequisite is that an IKU graduate must have knowledge of English and computer skills whatever his/her department or program is.
In 2009-2010 Academic year, 6797 students received education in 3 the doctorate and 28 postgraduate programs within two institutes and 17 programs of three vocational high schools and 20 departments within six faculties of IKU. Total 570 instructors lectured; 367 of which are full-time instructors, while 213 of them are hourly based. The rate of student/instructor is 11 at our university. Courses and practices are conducted in small groups, by ensuring the active involvement of students.
24,4% of our students are placed by ÖSYM on scholarship programs. In addition, full scholarship, monthly and cash aid scholarship have been provided to 35% of students, which means that two out of every three students hold scholarship at our university.
First associate degree and post graduates received their degrees in 1998-1999, while the the first bachelor degree graduates received their degrees in the 2000-2001 Academic year. All of our graduates began to work successfully and most of our associate degree graduates applied for bachelor degree programs via vertical transfer.
We would like to emphasize the fact that rules which re-regulate bachelor degree completion and put into effect in the 1999-2000 Academic year offers wide opportunities to the students with the required skills.
We believe that masters with a thesis which is conducted in accordance with personal trends in the relationship of a master/apprentice will offer the privilege of being sophisticated.
IKU considers artistic, cultural and scientific events as very important. Classical Music concerts, recitals, conferences and scientific meetings are periodically held in the modern halls of Ataköy and Şirinevler Campus. These events are highly appreciated by our students, parents and the public.
In addition to the indoor sports hall in Ataköy Campus, facility requirements of student clubs are met by the means of agreements made by various organizations in Ataköy, Bakırköy and Yeşilköy.
Directorate of Health Office offers health, guidance and psychological counseling services for IKU students. When necessary, Ataköy Hospital is utilized and offers wide opportunities for our students and IKU personnel.
One of the most important advantages that IKU offers in Istanbul is the ease of transport to campuses, which are very close to Ataköy and Yenibosna metro, bus and Metrobus stations. Our campus is located on E-5 highway and at a distance of 10 minutes from Atatürk Airport and Bakırköy Sea Bus port.

Conducting modern education activities which are open to international competition, IKU constantly follows improvements of the universities in advanced countries with regard to scientific and technological fields and communicates with such universities. For example, our university cooperated with the Herfordshire University of England, Alabama University and Idaho State University of United States of America, Gelsenkirchen University and Berlin Hür University of Germany since the foundation. Regarding scientific cooperation processes, special emphasis is placed on student programs and apprenticeship exchange, mutual appointment of instructors, and development of joint scientific and technical projects.
Our university is involved in AB Socrates and Erasmus Programs. In this regard, our university concluded cooperation agreements with various European universities for Erasmus/ Socrates Program and has several partner universities.
Exchange of students and instructors with these universities continue within scope of the Erasmus Program.

Zafer Kayaokay, the art director of the drama club of our university and an academician in the Art and Design Faculty of our university, has won the best director award in 2010 Intercollegiate Drama Contest.

Asst.Prof.Dr.Ramazan Livaoğlu, an academician in the department of civil engineering in the Engineering Faculty of Gümüşhane University, has been deemed worthy of Önder Öztunalı 2008 Science Award with his article titled ‘Investigation of Seismic Behavior of Fluid – Rectangular Tank – Soil / Foundation Systems in Freguency Domain’.
We are the Winner of the 12th Intercollegiate Advertisement Contest
In the contest, while the Art and Design Faculty Team of İstanbul Kültür University has come first, the Art and Design Faculty Team of Gazi University has come second, the Faculty of Communication Team of Ankara University has come third, Anadolu University Faculty of Communication Sciences Team has come fourth and İzmir Economics University Communication Faculty Team has come fifth. Nuri Çolakoğlu has been awarded as the winner team with a plaque.
In MIMED2009 Architecture Students Project Awards Contest while Canan Ganiç, a student in the department of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in İstanbul Kültür University, has been deemed worthy of Encouragement Award in freshmen’s category, Caner Bilgin has been deemed worthy of Jury’s Special Award in sophisters’ category.
Teamed by the sophisters of Civil Engineering Department, “STEELIST” Team, has come second in Intercollegiate Design&Construct 2009 Student Steel Bridge Contest, organized by the Construction Club in Boğaziçi University. Our Civil Engineering students have participated in this contest before and came first in 2007 and in 2008 they were awarded the second and third prize.
FIRST PRIZE FOR “PROSTEEL 2005 STEEL CONSTRUCTION STUDENT PROJECT CONTEST”
Prosteel 2005 Steel Construction Student Project Contest concerning Plastic Arts Gallery Design was held in 2005. The Jury has deemed Plastic Arts Gallery Design prepared by Faruk Sarnılıoğlu , Yusuf Karabatak, Kudret Aksu, Dicle Hökenek,Burcu Büke ve Yasemen Kaya, the students of Civil Engineering and Architecture in İstanbul Kültür University, worthy of first prize because of the sucess of overall mass and location of the suggested construction, harmonious usage of wood and steel in frontals, harmony with sloping land, created coherence and creative style in the overall project. İstanbul Kültür University Team represented our country in “Europe Intercollegiate Steel Project Contest” organized by ECCS (European Convention for Constructional Steelwork) at the end of 2005.
Istanbul Kültür University which started its education life with 3 faculties in the academic year of 1997-1998, now accepts students to 19 higher education programmes in 5 faculties.
Istanbul Kultur University has two campuses; Ataköy Campus and Şirinevler Campus. Faculty of Science and Letters, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Art and Design are in Ataköy Campus and Faculty of Law, Vocational Schools, School of Foreign Languages, dormitories for both male and female students are in Şirinevler Campus. The distance between two campuses takes 15 minutes on foot and also there are mutual bus services in every 15 minutes.
To meet the needs of students, food and other facilities are provided in campuses. For students coming from Kadıköy and Bostancı, bus services are organized to Bakırköy sea bus terminal in the mornings and in the evenings.
Both campuses are within 5-minute walking distance to bus and subway stops and it is possible to reach all the districts of Istanbul easily.
